Yep HO-OO scale are much cheaper, and easier to see finer detailing as they're bigger.
This is it, but I think the appeal of Z scale or even N scale which is half-way between Z and HO-OO, is the lilliputian effect they give.

True, but you can put a small Z gauge layout in a medium sized display case or on a window ledge.  Can't do that with HO-OO.

Yes, that's the main appeal, and detailing is still very realistic imho.  I agree though that HO-OO are much cheaper.

Yep, there's no way.  For HO-OO you'd need a loft as some have said, or a spare room or something like a shed.

Here's one in a briefcase!  Amazing!
There's 1999 Euros worth in that briefcase excluding shipping!  Very neat though.
